Contemporary Textiles Fair 2019

It’s not long now until this year’s Contemporary Textiles Fair which takes place at the Landmark Arts Centre in Teddington in just a few weeks’ time (see details below). This will be the second time that I’ve had a stand at this Fair. I’m looking forward to being part of a show again that champions Textile Art in all it’s forms. Last year, as it was the first time I’d done this show, I went for quite a conventional approach; displaying my work on the stand walls in a simple, gallery style and having a basic cloth-covered table with other smaller items on display taking up most of the floor space. I find it really tricky to decide how to design the space in these sorts of shows and also what work to take along with me. You can spend ages looking at Pinterest and Instagram to get an idea of what other people do, and still end up not having any clear idea about what you want to do, and worrying that you are just copying someone else’s ideas.

So, this year I thought, I would go with my instincts and plan something a bit more artistically different and quirky – a bit like a version of my own studio at home. I will be showcasing a new, specially-designed collection of pictures, as well as some work from existing collections with some design elements, and a bit of botanical decoration in the form of seed heads and dried flower heads.

My aim is to create an eye catching display that shows the links between what inspires me through my design process to my finished work, which will be displayed in a series of collections.

I’m not limiting myself to pure textile art this year, either. I wasn’t sure if work on paper would fit in to the show, but as I’ve decided to go for a more individual approach this year, I’ve decided to go with my instincts and include stitched art on paper and print inspired by stitch as well.

I hope that has whetted your appetite for the event. This year there are 75 textile artists and makers with a wide variety of styles and techniques. There is also a talk by the renowned textile art collector Diane Springall and an exhibition of some of her collection - which should be very interesting. If you are interested in coming along to the Fair, it takes place at the Landmark Arts Centre in Teddington from 23rd to 24th March (10am-5-pm) and a Preview Evening on Friday 22nd March from 6pm-8.30pm.
